A plastic dressing is applied to the incision site after surgery and will be removed when you return to our office during your first follow-up appointment.
Call our office if you notice unusual redness, drainage or an elevation in your body temperature.
Some swelling, discomfort and bruising may occur.
A prescription for pain medication will be given before you leave the hospital.
You should apply an ice pack to the incision site for the first 24 hours, and up to 72 hours as needed. Do not place the ice pack directly on the skin. Instead, wrap it in a towel and remove the pack for 15-20 minutes every hour.
During your healing period of approximately 4-6 weeks, follow these precautions to help your recovery go smoothly:
- You may shower with the plastic dressing in place.
- Lift only as much weight as you can manage easily.
- Walk as much as you want.
- You may drive as soon as you feel you can safely do so.
- Avoid foods that cause constipation and strain your incision. Some pain medication can cause constipation, which may be relieved with a mild stool softener or Milk of Magnesia.
- You can do light housework, as long as you do not strain.
- Take stairs slowly, one at a time.
- Your return to work will be discussed at your follow-up visit to our office.
- Sexual activity may resume if you use positions that do not cause strain on your incision.
